My term of office as District Governor of District 308B in the fiscal year of 1995-1996 can be summed up simply as a time where we built “Bridges of Partnership”.
The District forged meaningful partnerships which furthered our Lions credo of “We Serve”. We saw this with the renewed Memorandum of Understanding between Lions Clubs International District 308B with the Polis diRaja Malaysia, thus cementing the cooperation between both parties to cultivate a culture of educating the public on proper road conduct in an effort to ensure safety for every road user.
Another monumental District project was the Charity Show by the “China National Song & Dance Ensemble” graced by then Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The event raised more than RM800,000 in the fight against diabetes. Partnering the Malaysian Diabetic Association, Lions Clubs International District 308B led the charge towards the goal of establishing a diabetic resource centre to enable diabetic patients and their families to obtain relevant information and be informed on how to manage and eradicate the disease.
This spirit of partnership that District 308B undertook extended even beyond our shores, with the District Multiple Twinning between District 307A (Indonesia), District 310B (Thailand) and District 308B (Malaysia). This collaboration saw even more vibrant Lionism flourish within the region.
It was a very eventful year for me as District Governor, traversing the breadth of Peninsula Malaysia visiting clubs and participating in their projects. There were too numerous projects, activities and events to mention all, but what I remember most is the enthusiasm, sincerity and generosity of the clubs and its members in carrying out these projects. None were too large or too small. Lionism is an organisation dependent 100% upon its members. Each and every one plays a vital role in the growth and dynamism of Lionism, and I was heartened to see this in action at every activity I partook in.
I was really fortunate to have had with me, Lions within District 308B, Lions in the region and internationally, and many partners in the community who had the same vision of volunteerism and serving the community, and they made all the difference in making my tenure as District Governor a meaningful and memorable year.
